Nissan Titan Diesel Engine
Nissan Titan Diesel Engine
Following in the footsteps of the Detroit three and setting the bar for Toyota to catch up to, Nissan has decided to outfit its already dynamic Titan with a powerful turbo diesel engine.
Hidden deep within Columbus, Indiana, Cummins headquarters is working tirelessly on the fruits of a recent partnership between themselves and Japanese automaker, Nissan. The import brand has recognized a need to refresh the Titan design and appease the throngs of hard-working Nissan loyalists' plea for a diesel option in their lineup. In their efforts, they have appointed Cummins as a co-conspirator to this endeavor. With over 90 years of experience in the diesel engine industry, you can be sure that the Columbus Engine Plant, home of the Cummins engine, has the technology and expertise necessary to produce the best in the industry.
Nissan's recognition of the necessity to give consumers a diesel option for their light-duty Titan has split the entire lineup in half, producing a mid-range option for goldilocks buyers seeking a vehicle that bridges the gap between light- and heavy- duty pickup trucks.
Balance of Power, Performance & Fuel Economy
As stated by Fred Diaz, divisional Vice President, Nissan Sales & Marketing, Service & Parts, Nissan North America, the brand has done their homework: "Truck owners told us there's a demand for the performance and torque of a diesel in a capable truck that doesn't require the jump up to a heavy-duty commercial pickup. […] we expect to win new fans and attract buyers looking for this unique configuration."
We have full faith that they will. Cummins' 5.0-liter V8 turbo diesel has a power output of 310 horsepower and 555 lb-ft of torque, not only earning it the moniker of the "Triple Nickel" around the plant, but when combined with the Titan XD's newly redesigned chassis, provides the power that you would expect out of a heavy-duty truck in a versatile and easily maneuverable frame. It is a perfect balance of power, performance and fuel economy.
Working components of the new Cummins diesel V8 include a compacted graphite iron (CGI) cylinder block, forged steel crankshaft, high-strength aluminum alloy heads and composite valve covers all working uniformly with dual overhead camshafts to provide the new Titan with maximum durability in a lightweight package that growls like an angry beast.
Cummins has configured their M²™ Two-Stage Turbocharger to work optimally at both low and high engine speeds. Bosch's High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel system and piezo fuel injectors work in sync, providing precise fuel control for optimized in-cylinder combustion, allowing better fuel economy and emission reduction. Cummins' cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Emission Solutions Aftertreatment System, featuring a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), nearly completely eliminate all nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions, while also improving the Titan's performance and fuel economy.
Winter weather brings with it frigid cold, and anybody that has lived in Alberta for any length of time understands the inconvenience of having to leave their warm bed before dawn to preheat their truck before they can get it on the road. Cummins promises an advanced ceramic glow plug system that significantly reduces start time and electrical current draw, which will reduce the Titan's system charging requirements and meaning you can stay in a bed a little longer. The glow plugs themselves are designed to last as long as the engine does, with no maintenance, so there's one less expense coming out of your pocket.
Finally, to protect your new Titan against fuel contamination, this 5.0-liter V8 diesel engine features a two-stage fuel filter system with the latest NanoNet™ media from Cummins Filtration. NanoNet's system is designed to provide greater lower fuel-flow restriction, trapping more than 99 percent of all particles, even those as small as 4 microns.
The release of a diesel option for the Titan line is truly an inspiration, and one with the potential to put Nissan ahead of the domestic game. Check it out for yourself, and take the new 2016 Nissan Titan out for a spin.
